Biology Pen Pal Program

The Biology Pen Pal Program involves college students getting matched up with 6th grade students at Smith Middle School and writing entries back and forth in a journal. Grad students tell them about what college is like, what they like about science, etc. while the younger students write about what they are interested in, what they like about school, etc.

Currently, the students have been writing back and forth to their Pen Pals for ~2 months and will continue until the end of April when they will be able to meet their student during an on campus picnic lunch.

Visit the program’s blog to see what science questions the 6th graders have been asking and the grad students’ responses!

Questions or suggestions? Please contact Kayla Peck (kaylap@live.unc.edu).

Department Food Drive
The BGSA helped organize the Fall 2012 Biology Department Food Drive and also participated in the GPSF Can Castle Event which involved building a castle out of the donated items. The food was given to the Table, a hunger relief organization that helps feed hungry children in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area.
