2019 Biology Symposium
Overview:
The annual Biology Department Research Symposium is an event that brings the entire department together for a day of learning, sharing, and discussion. We are making a few changes to the symposium format this year in order to promote active participation from more members throughout the department. In addition to several morning workshop sessions (see below for more detail), this year’s symposium will feature:
- Short-format graduate student and postdoc talks (10-12 minutes each) with a prize awarded to the best talk based on audience votes
- “State of the field” paneldiscussions about major trends, questions, challenges, innovations, etc. that currently exist for several topic areas of broad interest within the department
Please register for each session you plan on attending as this will help us determine which room these sessions will be held.
Breakfast and coffee provided by BGSA and GPSF; lunch and happy hour drinks provided by the Biology Department.
Workshop Descriptions:
Defining yourself as a biology instructor: A workshop to build your Statement of Teaching Philosophy and Teaching Portfoliowith Mara Evans
Many academic jobs request that you submit a Statement of Teaching Philosophy (SOTP) along with your cover letter and research statement. What is this mysterious document? How do you write one so that you present your unique qualities as an educator and yet demonstrate that you will complement the institution to which you apply? How can a Teaching Portfolio also help you in your professional pursuits? Join us for a short workshop on these topics.
Requirements:Regardless of prior teaching experience, participants are asked to consider what they value most in teachingand bring either a draft of their SOTP, or a rough draft outline of their SOTP.
“Mini-Matrix” coffee breakwith Audrey Kelly
A take on the monthly lunch matrix format, this is an opportunity to get outside your comfort zone and interact with people from other labs in the department. Participates will be divided into small groups and have 5-10 minutes to chat before switching to a different group. There will also be coffee!

Unconscious bias and active inclusivity workshopwith Anna Parker and the SSC
Join members of the Safe Spaces Committee in a workshop designed to identify areas where we all hold implicit biases, and developing action steps we all can take to actively promote inclusivity.
