The 2021 Biology Department Research Symposium will be held Thursday, May 6th, virtually.

The annual Biology Department Research Symposium is an event that brings the entire department together for a day of learning, sharing, and discussion. This year we are mostly meeting virtually and staying safe. Adjusting to this new format some things are new this year:

  • Our interdisciplinary panelists will pre-record their talks, which will be available to view one week before the Symposium. Discussion of the talks will be held during the Symposium.
  • You can join the watch party of these talks on Wednesday, May 5th, from 1pm – 3:30pm.
  • Grab-and-go lunch will be offered in the GSB courtyard.
  • The social hour at the end of the Symposium will be virtual via the platform Wonder.
  • A cash prize for someone who attends the Symposium.

* In many ways, this year has felt like one big asterisk, but in the midst of an unprecedented year UNC Biology’s work has continued to cross barriers. We want to celebrate that other meaning of the asterisk as an open-ended search term. More than ever, let’s celebrate our common ground.

Workshop Descriptions:

Equitable Hiring Practices with SSC

Who deserves entry to our labs? How do we make biology accessible to all? Participants will develop strategies for evaluating student candidates equitably throughout the hiring process.

Diverse Careers with Catie Alves, Alissa Brown, Thiago Lima, Sara Snell-Taylor

Hear from recent UNC Biology graduates as they discuss life, work, and research outside of academia.
