On April 3rd, a group of faculty and students from the Biology Department set out to Battle Park for a nature walk. Leading the walk were plant identifying expert Alan Weakley, bird spotting expert Allen Hurlbert, and bird call expert Haven Wiley. There was also a special introduction to Battle Park given by Peter White.

Find below a list of the species that were spotted (courtesy of Allen Hurlbert) as well a few pictures of the walk. We delightedly learned that Carolina Wrens might call “teakettle, teakettle, teakettle” or “cheeseburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger” while Northern Cardinals might call “cheer, cheer, cheer.” We learned that Battle Park is special due to its maintenance as a forest of continuity (it has always been a forest). Additionally, we soon learned that we would never be able to remember all of the Latin names for the plants Alan identified…
